How to Make Video Tutorials for Students with Screencastify

Learn how to make video tutorials for students using Screencastify in order to build autonomy, differentiate instruction, and increase the reach and impact of your lessons.

Why Create Video Tutorials for Students?

Creating video tutorials relieves almost all of the stress that can come from introducing new tech programs to your students . I’ve tried projecting my screen and having all students follow along at the same time, but soon found out it was next to impossible for everyone to be at the same pace. One student was already delving into the advanced features of the program while another was still trying to login. Soon, every single student had their hand up, along with my blood pressure.

The solution is simple. Creating video tutorials for the new tech programs you roll-out in class using Screencastify, a free Google Chrome extension, will transform the way kids learn how to use tech.

I almost never teach new software anymore without creating a video tutorial first. It might seem like extra work, but spending an extra 15 minutes prepping my lesson means that tech roll-out no longer equates to “rip my hair out in frustration day,” plus making a tutorial forces me to better understand how a program works.

Even better, once the video tutorial is made, you can reuse it year-after-year. And once it’s posted to Google Classroom, your students can re-watch it as many times as they need. It takes the onus off the teacher, and helps students develop a sense of autonomy and mastery.  Plus, parents can watch the videos as well so they aren’t kept in the dark about all the technology programs you’re using in class.

Do More with Screencastify

In addition to creating tutorials, students can also learn to use Screencastify to create their own screen capture tutorials to explain their thinking, or to showcase their work.

Conclusion

Creating video tutorials for students does create some additional prep work, but it’s well worth the effort. Students will appreciate the ability the learn at their own pace, parents will appreciate the ability to learn for themselves how to navigate the programs you’re using, and you’ll appreciate how easy it is to roll out new education technology programs with your class.
